Manic Depression
When an individual face potentially harmful or worrying triggers, feelings of anxiety are not only normal but necessary for survival.
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a multifaceted condition influenced by a blend of genetic and non-genetic factors. Its mood episodes involve clinical depression or mania, interspersed with periods of normal mood. These mood swings can vary in intensity, occurring gradually or suddenly over days to weeks. When these distinct mood shifts happen four or more times annually, it’s termed “rapid cycling,” distinct from frequent moment-to-moment mood fluctuations seen in some bipolar disorder patients. Furthermore, individuals with bipolar disorder may experience cognitive disturbances, altered perceptions, and impaired social functioning.
Symptoms
Manic depression, also known as bipolar disorder, is characterized by alternating episodes of mania (or hypomania) and depression. Here are some key symptoms associated with the manic phase of bipolar disorder:
- Elevated Mood: Individuals may experience an abnormally high or euphoric mood. They often feel invincible and have heightened self-esteem.
- Increased Energy: A surge in energy levels is common, leading to hyperactivity and restlessness.
- Decreased Need for Sleep: Manic individuals might sleep very little or not at all without feeling fatigued.
- Racing Thoughts: Thoughts race uncontrollably, often leading to rapid speech, poor concentration, and distractibility.
- Grandiosity: People with mania may have grandiose ideas and unrealistic beliefs about their abilities and importance.
- Impulsivity: Impulsive behavior can manifest as reckless spending, risky sexual behaviors, or substance abuse.
- Irritability: Some individuals may become easily irritable, even during moments of elation.
- Increased Goal-Directed Activity: Individuals may take on many new projects or tasks, often with unrealistic goals and ambitions.
- Decreased Judgment: Impaired judgment can lead to engaging in activities with potentially harmful consequences.
- Agitation: Restlessness, irritability, and difficulty sitting still are common during manic episodes.
